Our Essence

Life Songs turns lived experience into original music — preserving memory, emotion, and identity. Each song becomes a lasting artistic record of a life lived in Australia.

Our Mission

To use music to transform personal stories into song, preserving memory and connecting generations through a living archive of Australian voices.

Our Vision

To create a national archive of personal histories told through music — strengthening wellbeing, community, and cultural memory, one song at a time.

Our Message

Each Life Song affirms that a life was seen, heard, and mattered. Set to music, stories endure — echoing through time, community, and memory.

How It Works

A message in a bottle

Long before language, there was song. Science suggests that song preceded speech — that melody and rhythm were the earliest forms through which humans shared knowledge, friendship, comfort, religion, joy, and love. Life Songs continues that ancient lineage — restoring song to its original purpose as a vessel of connection and understanding.

LIFE SONGS
PROOF OF CONCEPT

In 2024 Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), Peter Cousens and Talent Development Project past graduates teamed up to create an industry-first partnership Life Songs - Music and Memories.
Life Songs - Music and Memories initiative connected singer songwriters Jordyn Richards, Sam Green, Jade Steg and Abi Morgan, with six participants who were in various stages in their dementia journey. Through a ‘get to know’ deep dive, each musician interviewed their respective participants then wrote a song to capture the essence of their lives and personalities.
At a deeply moving event in 2024 the three songs were gifted to Ann, May and John, the participants and family members. At a second event Royce, Gary and George and their families were also gifted their songs.
Life Songs plans to build tempo on the powerful relationship between music and memories, giving all aging Australians, including people with dementia and their families this unique gift through song.

The six complete songs can be heard here.
